Geography of Gainesville

Gainesville, Florida, the seat of Alachua County. It is in north-central Florida, 60 miles (97 km) southwest of Jacksonville. This resort city is the seat of the University of Florida and of the Florida State Museum. Gainesville was founded about 1854 on the site of a trading post established in 1830. The city was incorporated in 1869.
