Bethesda,Maryland, an unincorporated suburb of Washington, D.C. It is primarily a residential community but is also the site of a number of federal agencies. Foremost of these are the National Institutes of Health and the Naval Medical Center. Bethesda had few residents until World War II (200 in 1940), but then grew rapidly.
