Geography of Hopewell

Hopewell, Virginia, an independent city of east-central Virginia. It is a port of entry at the junction of the James and Appomattox rivers, 18 miles (29 km) south-southeast of Richmond. Appomattox Manor House, General Ulysses S. Grant's headquarters during 1864–65, is here. Petersburg National Battlefield and Fort Lee, an army post, are nearby. Hopewell was incorporated as a city in 1916. City Point, founded in 1613 as one of the first English settlements in America, was annexed in 1923. Hopewell has the council-manager form of government.
