Geography of Athens-Georgia

Athens, or Athens-Clarke County, a consolidated city in Georgia. It lies on the Oconee River, about 60 miles (97 km) east of Atlanta. Athens has a variety of light manufacturing industries and serves as a trading and processing center for the surrounding agricultural area. The city of Athens was founded in 1801 as the home of the University of Georgia. In 1991, the city of Athens and Clarke County formed the consolidated city of Athens-Clarke County. The city has the mayor-council form of government.
