Geography of Lynchburg
Lynchburg, Virginia, a city in the west-central portion of the state. It is an independent city—that is, it is not within a county. Lynchburg is on the James River, 115 miles (185 km) west-southwest of Richmond. The city is a trading and shipping center for an agricultural area and is a leading dark-leaf tobacco market. Manufactured products include paper, shoes, garments, foundry products, and electronic products. Lynchburg College and Randolph-Macon Woman's College are here. Lynchburg is named for John Lynch, who settled here in 1757.
