Geography of Moundsville
Moundsville, West Virginia, the seat of Marshall County. The city is on the Ohio River in a coal-mining area, 11 miles (18 km) south of Wheeling. Moundsville was named for Grave Creek Mound, one of the largest of prehistoric Indian mounds. It is 79 feet (24 m) high, 900 feet (274 m) around at the base, and 50 feet (15 m) across at the top. It contains burial chambers. Indians of the Adena culture built the mound about 500 B.C. An archeological museum is nearby.
The city is also the site of the state penitentiary. Moundsville was chartered as a city in 1865.
