Geography of Hammond

Hammond, Indiana, a city in Lake County. It was once called State Line because it borders Illinois, 20 miles (32 km) south-southeast of downtown Chicago. Canals from the Grand Calumet and Little Calumet rivers link Hammond with nearby Lake Michigan ports.

Hammond is in the highly industrialized Calumet area and manufactures a variety of products. Purdue University Calumet is here. The city's growth began in 1868 when George Hammond, a meat packer after whom the settlement was renamed, opened a plant here.
