Geography of Burlington

Burlington, Iowa, the seat of Des Moines County. It is on four hills overlooking the Mississippi River, 85 miles (137 km) southeast of Cedar Rapids. Burlington has factories that produce heavy machinery, electrical equipment, military equipment, furniture, and food products. Most factories are along the riverfront.

Burlington was settled in 1829 and chartered as a city in 1838. It was the temporary capital of the Territory of Iowa in 1838. Its newspaper, the Burlington Hawkeye, one of the oldest in the state, was made famous by Robert J. Burdette. Burlington has the mayor-council form of government.
