Geography of Monterrey
Monterrey, Mexico, one of the nation's principal cities and the capital of Nuevo Leon state. It is in northeastern Mexico near the Sierra Madre Oriental range, at an elevation of about 1,750 feet (530 m). As a major industrial and financial center, Monterrey is second only to Mexico City. Steel, textiles, glass, and beer are among the chief products. Nearby is one of the leading citrus-producing areas in Mexico. Monterrey is an important highway and railway junction, and, it has an international airport. Educational institutions include the state university and a technological institute.
Monterrey was founded in 1596 and remained small for nearly three centuries. In 1846, during the Mexican War, it was occupied by United States troops. Rapid growth began in the 1880's with the construction of railways to Monterrey.
