Swansea, Wales, a city in Swansea County, on Swansea Bay at the mouth of the Tawe River. Swansea is a major Welsh seaport and industrial center, noted primarily for metallurgical industries that produce tinplate, sheet steel, and processed metals, such as nickel and zinc. Other industries include oil refining and chemical manufacturing. The University College of Swansea, part of the University of Wales, is here. Swansea was first chartered in the 12th century. Modern industrial development began in the 1800's.
