Bath, England, a resort city in Somerset. It is on the Avon River about 100 miles (160 km) west of London. Its famous hot springs, with temperatures from 108° to 117° F. (42° to 47° C.), were discovered by the Romans about the first century A.D.Ruins of Roman baths, destroyed by the Saxons in 577, may still be seen. The Benedictine abbey that is here was built in the 16th century. An annual music festival is a popular attraction.
