Geography of Bradford
Bradford, England, a city at the foot of the Pennine Chain in West Yorkshire. Bradford is 192 miles (309 km) northwest of London, on a branch of the Aire River. The city is a center of England's wool-combing and worsted industry. Peaty soil makes Bradford's water very soft, excellent for washing wool. Besides woolens, Bradford produces other textiles, automobiles, and textile and electrical machinery. A 15th-century cathedral and several technical schools are in the city. Bradford has been a trade center since Saxon times. Its first power worsted mill was built in 1798.
