Geography of Lewis and Harris
Lewis and Harris, Scotland, the names given to the largest and most northerly island of the Outer Hebrides. The northern part of the island is called Lewis, the southern part Harris. A narrow neck of land joins them. The North Minch separates the island from the northwestern coast of Scotland. The island is up to 60 miles (96 km) long and 30 miles (48 km) wide, with a total area of 770 square miles (1,994 km2). Fishing, sheep and cattle raising, and the production of homespun tweeds (“Harris tweeds”) are the main occupations.
