Bolton, England, a city 11 miles (18 km) north of Manchester. Since the arrival of the Flemish in 1337, Bolton has been one of the main textile centers of England. It specializes in muslins and calicoes. Richard Arkwright, inventor of the spinning frame, and Samuel Crompton, who invented the spinning mule, lived here.
