Geography of Londonderry

Londonderry, Northern Ireland, the seat of County Londonderry in the northwestern part of the country. The city is also known as Derry. It lies on the Foyle River, near where the river empties into Lough Foyle. It is a seaport and a distribution center for local agricultural products. Textile manufacturing is the main industry.

Londonderry was founded in 546 A.D.by Saint Columba, who built an abbey here. In the early 17th century large numbers of Protestants, mostly Scots, came to the city. In 1689 the city withstood a 105-day siege by the Catholic forces of King James II, an event celebrated annually. Conflict between Protestants and Catholics continued through the centuries and there were violent clashes in the 1960's, 1970's, and 1980's.
