Geography of Krasnodar
Krasnodar, Russia, a city on the Kuban River near the Caucasus Mountains. Krasnodar is primarily a manufacturing city, producing foods, textiles, machinery, and petroleum products. It is also a railway hub. Kuban State University and several technical institutes are here.
Krasnodar was founded in the 1790's as a frontier Cossack settlement and was originally named Yekaterinodar, in honor of Empress Catherine the Great. Growth came mainly in the late 19th century and the 20th century, mostly under the Soviets.
