Geography of Samara

Samara,Russia, a city in the central Volga region. Samara is 550 miles (885 km) southeast of Moscow, at the junction of the Samara and Volga rivers. It is an industrial city and an important river, rail, and air transportation center. Nearby are large oil refineries. Samara was founded in 1586 as a military outpost. In 1935 it was renamed Kuybyshev in honor of a Communist administrator. During World War II the city served as the temporary capital of the Soviet Union (1941–43). In 1991 the city's original name was restored.
