Geography of Dagestan
Dagestan is a Russian republic on the west shore of the Caspian Sea.Dagestan, or Dagestan Republic, a republic in southeast Russia, on the coast of the Caspian Sea. The Caucasus Mountains lie in Dagestan's southern region. The capital is Makhachkala. Dagestan is an ethnically diverse region, with inhabitants of more than 30 separate nationalities.
In 1999, Chechen rebels from neighboring Chechnya twice invaded Dagestan. Russian troops fought against the rebels on both occasions until the rebels were forced back into Chechnya.
In 2002, 45 people were killed when a terrorist bomb was exploded during a holiday parade.
