Geography of Howrah
Howrah, or Haora, India, a city in West Bengal state. It lies on the west bank of the Hooghly River, opposite Kolkata (Calcutta), to which it is connected by one of the world's longest cantilever bridges. Howrah is an industrial city, a port, and a railway hub—the terminus of lines linking Kolkata with Delhi, Mumbai (Bombay), and Chennai (Madras). India's jute-processing industry is centered here, producing burlap, rope, and twine. Other manufactured goods include cotton textiles, glass, and metal products. The city has a 270-acre (109-hectare) botanical garden.
Howrah was a small town until the construction of the railways in the late 1800's. Industrialization brought rapid growth during the 20th century.
