Sibyl, in Roman mythology, a female prophet. Sibyls were usually priestesses of the god Apollo, who was said to inspire their prophecies. The most famous of them was the sibyl of Cumae, in Italy, who was said to have lived for a thousand years. According to legend, she wrote the Sibylline Books, important prophecies concerning the destiny of Rome.
