Saturn
Saturn, in Roman mythology, a god of agriculture. He was identified with the Greek Cronus, who ruled the universe before the Olympian gods became supreme. After being overthrown Cronus went to Italy, where as Saturn he taught the people to grow grapes and olives and established a Golden Age of order and plenty. The country was called Saturnia, in his honor.
The Saturnalia, a festival commemorating the Golden Age, was celebrated by the Romans December 17–23. It was a week of merrymaking, with feasting and games. Slaves were waited on by their masters. Gifts were exchanged. When the Christian Era began, many of the festive customs of the Saturnalia were transferred to the Christmas-New Year holiday.
