Lares and Penates
Lares and Penates household gods of the ancient Romans. The term has come to mean personal or household possessions. The lares usually were deified spirits of ancestors or heroes. The lar familiaris was the spirit of the household's founder. It never left the establishment, but remained with the descendants forever. The penates were guardian gods of the storeroom who protected the welfare of the household. Offerings were made to them before each meal. The penates of the ruler's household were also considered guardians of the state.
