Augur
Augur in ancient Rome, an official diviner who foretold events by omens. At first the college of augurs had three diviners but the number was eventually increased to 16. No important public activity was undertaken without first consulting the augurs, who announced the approval or disapproval of the gods. They based their opinions on their interpretation of various signs, such as lightning and thunder and the flight and cries of birds.
