Janus, in Roman mythology, the god of doorways and beginnings. The month of January is named for him. Janus was represented as having two faces, one looking forward and the other backward. His name was invoked even before Jupiter's at the beginning of every undertaking. As guardian of the gate of heaven, Janus was called the “opener” and the “shutter.”
