Geography of Carson City
Carson City, Nevada, the state capital. Carson City was named after the Indian scout and explorer Kit Carson. The city is near the western boundary of the state, about 25 miles (40 km) south of Reno. To the northeast is Virginia City, site of the Comstock Lode, and to the west Lake Tahoe. Carson City was founded in 1858 and made the state capital in 1864. The capitol was built in 1870. The Carson City Mint, once a branch of the United States Mint, now serves as a state museum.
