Hilo, Hawaii, a port and the seat of Hawaii County. It is on Hilo Bay on the east coast of the island of Hawaii, 250 miles (400 km) southeast of Honolulu. Sugar manufacturing is the main industry. Sugar, coffee, cattle, fruits, and orchids are shipped from Hilo. A campus of the University of Hawaii is in the city. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is nearby. United States missionaries established a settlement at Hilo in 1823. It was incorporated in 1905. A tidal wave in 1946 caused much damage to the city.
