Geography of Spartanburg
Spartanburg, South Carolina, the seat of Spartanburg County. It lies in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, about 85 miles (137 km) northwest of Columbia, and is the shipping center for an agricultural region noted for peaches. Spartanburg has large textile mills and also produces automobiles, paper products, plumbing fixtures, printed material, and chemicals. Wofford College and Converse College are here. Nearby are Cowpens National Battlefield Site and the restored 18th-century Walnut Grove Plantation. Spartanburg was founded as the county seat in 1785 and incorporated as a city in 1831.
