Geography of Laurel

Laurel, Mississippi, the seat of Jones County. It is 78 miles (126 km) southeast of Jackson, in the heart of the yellow-pine district. Lumbering and the manufacture of wood products are Laurel's chief industries. The city also has an oil refinery. A Choctaw Indian community is at nearby Bogue Homa. Laurel was founded in 1881 as a lumber camp and was incorporated as a city in 1890.
