Geography of Lakeland

Lakeland, Florida, a city in Polk County. It is 32 miles (51 km) east of Tampa. Lakeland is an important shipping point for the citrus fruit industry. Vegetables, strawberries, and cattle are also raised on nearby farms and ranches. Rich pebble phosphate mines are located nearby. Florida Southern College, which has a campus designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, is here. Also here is the Southeastern College of the Assemblies of God.

Lakeland is a winter resort. Major league spring exhibition baseball games are held at Merchant Stadium. The Orange Cup international motorboat regatta is held in the winter on Lake Hollingsworth. Lakeland Municipal Airport is the site of a large air show each April. Lakeland was incorporated in 1885.
