Geography of Owensboro
Owensboro, Kentucky, the seat of Daviess County. It is on the Ohio River, 85 miles (137 km) southwest of Louisville. Products include electrical and electronic equipment, whiskey, and furniture. The city is one of the largest dark-tobacco markets in the United States. There are petroleum, gas, and coal fields nearby. Kentucky Wesleyan and Brescia colleges are here.
Owensboro, when first settled in 1800, was known as "Yellow Banks" because of the yellow color of the river bank. It was incorporated as a town in 1817, and given the name Owensborough, later changed to Owensboro.
