Mauna Kea, a dormant (inactive) volcano on the island of Hawaii. Mauna Kea is the highest peak in Hawaii, rising 13,796 feet (4,205 m) above sea level and some 32,000 feet (9,754 m) from its base at the ocean's bottom. The name means “White Mountain” and refers to the peak's winter snowcap. Several astronomical observatories are located near the summit.
