Geography of Chillicothe

Chillicothe, Ohio, the seat of Ross County. It is on the Scioto River and Paint Creek, 45 miles (72 km) south of Columbus, in one of Ohio's principal agricultural regions. Hopewell Culture National Historical Park, site of a group of prehistoric Indian mounds, is nearby.

Chillicothe was founded in 1796 and from 1800 to 1802 was headquarters for the governor of the Northwest Territory. In 1802 it was the site of the state's first constitutional convention. It was Ohio's capital in 1803–10 and again in 1812–16.
