Lawrence, Kansas, the seat of Douglas County. It is on the Kansas River in the northeastern part of the state, near Kansas City. Lawrence is an educational center, a manufacturing city, and the trade center for a rich agricultural area. Located in the city are the University of Kansas and Haskell Indian Nations University. Baker University is in nearby Baldwin City.

Lawrence was settled in 1854 by antislavery emigrants who received financial support from the abolitionist New England Emigrant Aid Company. The settlement was burned by proslavery settlers in 1856. In 1863, William Quantrill's Confederate raiders again burned the city and massacred some 150 inhabitants.
