Geography of Thunder Bay

Thunder Bay, Ontario, a major Canadian port. It lies on Thunder Bay, an arm of Lake Superior. From the port are shipped wheat, iron ore, and newsprint. Lakehead University is here. Trading posts were established at the site of Thunder Bay as early as 1678. One of these, Fort William, became the main post of the North West Company in the early 1800's. Permanent settlement came later in the century with silver mining and the arrival of railways. Fort William and neighboring Port Arthur merged to form Thunder Bay in 1970.
