Geography of Haifa
Haifa, Israel, the nation's chief port. The city lies on the Mediterranean Sea at the northern end of Mount Carmel, about 50 miles (80 km) north of Tel Aviv. Haifa is Israel's leading center of heavy industry. Bahá'í Shrine and Archives, the Technion (Israel Institute of Technology), and Haifa University are here. Haifa existed by the third century A.D. but remained insignificant until the Crusaders made it a fortified port in the 1100's.
