Geography of Hyderabad

Hyderabad, Pakistan, a city in Sind province. It is on the Indus River, near the Thar Desert, about 90 miles (140 km) northeast of Karachi, Pakistan's largest city and chief port. Hyderabad is a trade center for an irrigated agricultural area along the Indus and is a manufacturing city, producing fine handicrafts and modern industrial goods. It is also a railway and highway center. Attractions include an old fort that rises on a hill above the city and the nearby tombs of early Muslim rulers. Sind University and Sind Agricultural University are here.

Hyderabad was founded in 1768 by Afghans and became the capital of an emirate. In 1843 it was conquered by the British. The city was the capital of Sind province from 1947 until 1955, when Karachi became the capital.
