Geography of Aden
Aden, Yemen, a city and seaport. Lying on the Gulf of Aden near the entrance to the Red Sea, it is a major port, a petroleum refining center, and a refueling station, especially for ships using the Suez Canal route. Aden was a centuries-old Arab port when taken by the British in 1837. It was administered as part of India until 1937, when it became a separate British colony. Aden was the capital of South Yemen, 1967-90. In 1990 North and South Yemen were united as the Republic of Yemen with Sana as its capital.
