Geography of Sana
Sana, the capital of Yemen. It lies on a plateau about 7,200 feet (2,200 m) above sea level in one of the best farming areas on the Arabian Peninsula. Sana is an ancient walled city with multistory buildings of sun-dried brick and dirt streets. There is virtually no industry except that of the handicraft type. Sana has a jet airport and is linked by a highway to Aden, the country's chief port and commercial center.
Sana was a flourishing city before the time of Christ. It came under Ethiopian control in the sixth century A.D. Following the spread of Islam in the seventh century, it became the seat of a small Islamic state. The Ottoman Turks ruled Sana from the early 16th century until 1918, but except for brief periods, exercised little control.
