Geography of Tabriz

Tabriz, Iran, one of the nation's largest cities and the capital of East Azerbaijan province. Tabriz is in northwestern Iran, near Lake Urmia and Iran's border with Azerbaijan and Armenia. It is a commercial and transportation center. Carpets and textiles, leather goods, and foods are among the city's products. The University of Tabriz is here. Few historic buildings have survived the city's many earthquakes.

Tabriz probably dates from the 3rd century A.D. Late in the 13th century it became the capital of the II-khan empire of the Mongols and rose to great prominence. The city was sacked by Tamerlane in 1392 and made part of his domain. The Safawid dynasty of Persia made Tabriz their first capital in the 16th century. During subsequent years the city was held at various times by the Turks and the Russians.
