Aragon

Aragon, a region in northeastern Spain, once a kingdom. The area was conquered by the Visigoths (fifth century), the Moors (eighth century), and the Franks (ninth century). Aragon became a part of the kingdom of Navarre in the latter part of the ninth century and, in 1035, an independent kingdom. In the 13th century it became an important sea power, and by 1442 it had extended its rule as far as Sardinia and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. The marriage of King Ferdinand of Aragon to Queen Isabella of Castile led to the unification, in 1479, of the two kingdoms into Spain.
