Lake Balaton

Balaton, Lake, the largest lake in central Europe. It is in west-central Hungary, 60 miles (97 km) southwest of Budapest. Balaton covers 230 square miles (596 km2). It is 48 miles (77 km) long and averages about 5 miles (8 km) in width and 11 feet (3.4 m) in depth. The lake has many fish and is navigable by lake and river steamers. Grapes, figs, and peaches grow along the shores.
