Geography of Rostock
Rostock, Germany, a city in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania. It is on the Warnow River, about 12 miles (19 km) from the Baltic Sea.
Rostock is one of Germany's chief seaports, and has a large shipbuilding industry. Deepwater port facilities are at the Warnow's mouth. In addition to ships, Rostock produces chemicals, machinery, electrical equipment, and textiles. The University of Rostock dates from 1419.
Rostock was founded in the 12th century A.D. It received a charter in 1218 and became part of the free state of Mecklenburg in 1323. Rostock prospered as a member of the Hanseatic League, but later declined. Recovery came primarily in the 20th century.
