Geography of Helena

Helena, Montana, the state capital and the seat of Lewis and Clark County. Helena is situated at the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains near the Great Plains, in the west-central part of the state. Elevation is about 4,100 feet (1,250 m).

Helena is an agricultural marketing and shipping point and has facilities that process metallic ores. Carroll College is here. The Montana Historical Society Museum features works by Charles M. Russell, the “cowboy artist.” Helena was founded in 1864, after four prospectors found gold at Last Chance Gulch (the site of what is now Helena's Main Street). It became the capital of Montana Territory in 1875 and of the state in 1889. In 1935 earthquakes did considerable damage here.
