Bellingham, Washington, the seat of Whatcom County. It is on Bellingham Bay, 80 miles (130 km) north of Seattle near the Canadian border. Lumber milling and commercial fishing are major economic activities. Western Washington University is here. Bellingham was settled in 1853.
