Bowie, Maryland, a city in Prince Georges County. It is on the Patuxent River about 15 miles (24 km) east-northeast of downtown Washington, D.C. Bowie is largely a residential suburb. Bowie State College, Bowie Race Track, and Belair Stables Museum are here. Much of the city occupies former pastures of the Belair Stables, which produced some of the United States' greatest Thoroughbred horses before closing in 1955. Bowie was incorporated in 1916. Virtually all the city's growth has come since 1960.
