Chester, Pennsylvania, a port city in Delaware County. It is on the Delaware River near Philadelphia, in the southeastern part of the state. Chester is an industrial city that manufactures a variety of products and has large shipyards and dry docks. Widener University is in the city and Swarthmore College is nearby.

Chester is the oldest city in Pennsylvania. It was settled by Swedish colonists in 1644 and was later taken over by English settlers, who named it Upland. William Penn landed here in 1682 and renamed the settlement Chester.
