Geography of Fall River

Fall River, Massachusetts, a city in Bristol County. It is on Mount Hope Bay at the mouth of the Taunton River, about 45 miles (72 km) south of Boston. Fall River is a manufacturing city whose main products are clothing and textiles. Large amounts of petroleum are shipped into the city's port. A World War II battleship, the Massachusetts, is berthed here as a war memorial. Nearby is the Marine Museum, devoted to the history of steam-powered vessels.

Fall River was settled in 1656. During the 19th century it became a leading center of the thriving New England textile industry. The population began declining in the 1920's when the textile industry began to move to the South. In 1893 a celebrated murder trial was held here in which Lizzie Borden was acquitted of killing her father and stepmother. .)
