Geography of Fond Du Lac

Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, the seat of Fond du Lac County. It is at the south end of Lake Winnebago, 60 miles (97 km) north-northwest of Milwaukee. The city's factories manufacture outboard motors, machine tools, and automobile parts. The city is also the trade center for a dairying region. Historic Galloway House and Village, a group of restored 19th-century buildings, is a popular attraction.

Fond du Lac, the name given this area in the 1700's by French traders traveling south from Canada, means “bottom (far end) of the lake.” By 1785 a fur-trading post had been established here. Fond du Lac was permanently settled about 1835.
