Lake Louise
Louise, Lake, a body of water in Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies, southwestern Alberta. The lake is situated 5,670 feet (1,728 m) above sea level and is about 1 1/2 miles (2.4 km) long and 3/4 of a mile (1.2 km) wide. Icy, blue-green waters, supplied by melting ice from Victoria Glacier, mirror the surrounding peaks. The lake drains eastward into the Bow River. Scenery and excellent tourist facilities make the area one of the most popular vacation resorts in Canada. The lake was discovered in 1882. It was named for Princess Louise, daughter of Queen Victoria and wife of the Marquess of Lorne, Duke of Argyll, a governor general of Canada.
