Geography of Beersheba
Beersheba, or Beer Sheva, Israel, the administrative center of the Southern district. The city lies at the northern edge of the Negev, a desert, about 50 miles (80 km) southwest of Jerusalem. Beersheba is an industrial city and a processing and shipping center for locally grown agricultural products. Ben Gurion University of the Negev is here.
Ancient Beersheba was inhabited as early as 4000 B.C. and is mentioned often in the Bible. Beersheba was the first Palestinian town taken from the Turks by the British in 1917. It was made part of the new state of Israel in 1948.
